For those of you who do not know, Mrs. Arnett will be retiring at the end of this school year. She has taught for 43 years and spent 10 of them at LHS. For the past two years, she has also been the head of the English department. It is no doubt that Mrs. Arnett’s positive attitude and quirky personality will certainly be missed next year.
As one of the most creative people in the school, she is well-known for making students think “out of the box” and testing your innovative side. Every year, she has a different theme for her classroom and relates to that concept throughout the year. For example, last year she decorated her room with pictures of elephants and the motto for the year was, “Do not think of the elephant.” Mrs. Arnett used elephants as an analogy for her students. She said that elephants get chained up when they are being trained for the circus. These elephants are clearly big enough to break the chains, however when they feel something around their feet, they think it is holding them down. She told her students to not let anything weigh them down and to “break the chains” unlike the elephants. The idea was for this analogy to motivate students to never get up, no matter what obstacles they may face.
As many people know, it is examples like this that make Mrs. Arnett such a special teacher. She is one of those teachers who cares about her students outside of just their grade in class. She gives students the opportunity to relate current events to the classroom and teaches them skills that will be useful in life after high school. Whether it’s her teaching skills, witty humor or bright smile, LHS will definitely miss her next year.
So, Mrs. Arnett, we would like to thank you for dedicating 43 years to education. You have helped brighten the future of many students. We wish you the best of luck and a very happy retirement!
